My Passport Was Lost or Stolen Abroad — What Can I Do?

My Passport Was Lost or Stolen Abroad — What Can I Do?
Lost your passport while travelling? Or had it stolen while abroad?
First of all — don’t panic. It happens more often than you think, and there’s a clear process in place to help you get home safely and sort a replacement.
🚨 Step 1: Report It Immediately
If your UK passport has been lost or stolen overseas, report it to:
- The local police (get a report or reference number)
- The UK Government via this official page:
https://www.gov.uk/report-a-lost-or-stolen-passport
This helps protect your identity and stops someone else from using your passport.
🛂 Step 2: Apply for an Emergency Travel Document (ETD)
If you're abroad and need to return to the UK quickly, you’ll need to apply for an Emergency Travel Document (ETD).
Apply here: https://www.gov.uk/emergency-travel-document
To get an ETD, you’ll need:
- Proof of travel (flights, accommodation)
- An online photo (passport-style)
- Details of your lost/stolen passport
- Payment (currently £100)
Once approved, you’ll collect the ETD from the nearest British embassy, consulate, or high commission.
✈️ What Happens When You Return to the UK?
Your ETD is only valid for a single journey back to the UK (or onward if you're travelling home via another country). Once you're back, you’ll need to apply for a replacement passport.
📆 Want a Fast Replacement When You Get Back?
If you need your new passport urgently after returning to the UK, we can help you:
- Book a 1-Day Premium or 7-Day Fast Track appointment
- Attend the appointment on your behalf (if eligible)
- Collect and deliver your new passport the same day
