Losing your passport abroad is stressful — but it doesn’t mean you’re stranded. As a UK citizen, there are clear steps you can take to get home legally and safely. Here’s a step-by-step guide to what to do if your passport is lost or stolen while you’re overseas.

Step 1: Report the Loss or Theft

If your passport is stolen, report it to the local police immediately and ask for a copy of the report. Even if it’s just lost, reporting it can help prove your case later. You must also report it to HM Passport Office online through the official GOV.UK website to cancel your passport and prevent misuse.

Step 2: Apply for an Emergency Travel Document (ETD)

The UK government issues Emergency Travel Documents (ETDs) from British embassies, consulates, or high commissions abroad. These documents allow you to travel back to the UK or in some cases to your next destination if you have more than one leg of travel.

• Book an appointment online via GOV.UK
• Provide proof of travel (flight booking, train ticket, etc.)
• Bring a digital passport photo (often taken locally)
• Pay the fee (£100 as of 2025)

Step 3: Documents You’ll Need

When applying for an ETD, you’ll usually need:

• Completed ETD application form (online)
• Police report (if stolen)
• Flight details or proof of travel
• One passport photo (meeting UK passport standards)
• Any other form of ID (driving licence, photocopy of old passport if you have it)

Step 4: Collect Your Emergency Travel Document

ETDs are normally issued within 1–2 days, sometimes the same day if your case is urgent and your documents are in order. You’ll collect it from the embassy or consulate you applied to.

Step 5: What Happens When You Return to the UK

An ETD is temporary. Once back in the UK, you’ll need to apply for a full passport renewal straight away. If you already had travel booked after your return, factor in time to renew before you can leave again.
